Maugersbury, Listed Garden Room Extension
We were asked to extend, renovate, and extend a listed manor house in Cotswold District Council area. This is a prominent manor house within the village of Maugersbury and is particularly noteworthy because of its historical importance as a prominent Cotswold manor house.
When my clients purchased the property, the manor house had been divided into a series of flats. Over time, the building had fallen into a fairly poor state of repair. My client’s objective was to remove the subdivision and restore the Cotswold manor house to its former glory.
As part of the proposed designs, my clients wanted to incorporate a garden room as an addition to the rear of the property. Traditional period properties typically feature relatively small windows and openings. Garden rooms, on the other hand, usually incorporate relatively large amounts of glazing, and therefore, a garden room can be an exceptional addition to a traditional period property, as it enables occupants to remain within the house while enjoying fantastic views of the garden throughout the year.
For this project, we worked closely with a planning consultant and a building historian, and we engaged with the local authority. The client’s brief was relatively flexible and relaxed. They were simply looking for an extension with a relatively large amount of glazing, but they were receptive to either contemporary or traditional designs.
Initially, we gained consent for a relatively contemporary design; however, prior to construction, the property underwent a change of ownership. Acting on behalf of the new owners, we revised the design to create a more traditional orangery/garden room on the rear of this listed Cotswold manor house.
Ultimately, we secured both planning and listed building approval to construct a traditional orangery. The work was undertaken with care and precision and the result, as can be seen in these images, seamlessly integrates the property’s historical charm while incorporating modern and contemporary features.
