Hornton, Contemporary Glass Extension
This is a contemporary glass extension to a listed building. The existing farmhouse is located within the village of Hornton, is a listed building and is located within Cherwell District Council.
We have previously gained planning approval for a detached garden entertainment space, when we were approached by our existing client to extend the existing listed farmhouse.
Our client very much enjoyed the character of the listed farmhouse, but at the same time found aspects of it to be frustrating. With this style of property the walls are very thick and imposing, and the windows are usually very small, ending up with a relatively dark house with fairly minimal views. The client being super proud of her garden, wanted to take pleasure from the garden from within the house.
We went through the client’s brief and suggested a contemporary extension with the proposal being very different to the existing farmhouse. Extensions to listed buildings can be incredibly hard to achieve, as you need to be very careful about how you interact with the historic fabric of the existing building.
We designed a very delicate glass junction between our proposed extension and the existing building, which was fairly non-intrusive. This glass join is a detail we have used on other listed buildings to considerable positive affect.
This listed building extension created a garden room that our client could use all year round. With wraparound glazing looking out into the garden it is a room that is comfortable to use throughout the summer months, but supported by a wood-burning stove to create a cosy winter space.
