Bledington, New Residential Barn

This project created a new residential dwelling in open countryside in the style of a barn conversion within Cotswold District Council. This particular site has been the subject of multiple planning applications with the house being grown in size and stature with each new submission.

We have to think outside the box for this scheme because planning policies are generally against creating new dwellings in the countryside. Fortunately on this site there was an existing concrete block modern barn sitting over a fairly decent footprint. We approached Cotswold District Council with a scheme to demolish the existing barn and construct a stone holiday structure as a detached four bedroom property. Planning permission was ultimately granted. Prior to construction of the holiday let, a follow-up planning application was submitted and approved for the same scheme, but to be used as a detached residential dwelling.

The scheme was constructed and shortly afterwards, planning permission was obtained for an extension to the property which was undertaken. This planning application was followed up by a handful of additional applications, each one seeking either an enlargement or an extra building within the grounds of the dwelling. The property was meticulously designed to incorporate design elements reminiscent of an agricultural barn that had been converted to a dwelling, and deliberately look that it has evolved over time which is a general design style that works very well with barn conversions.
